Understanding DMX Addressing

In lighting design, DMX512 is the standard communication protocol used to control everything from simple LED par cans to complex moving heads, fog machines, and lasers. A single line of DMX (called a Universe) contains exactly 512 distinct channels of control.

Every fixture on your lighting rig requires a specific starting address. If a moving head uses 16 channels and its starting address is set to 1, it will respond to instructions sent on channels 1 through 16. To ensure your lighting console can control the next light independently, the next fixture must be patched starting at channel 17.

What does DMX512 stand for?

DMX512 stands for Digital Multiplex, with 512 representing the maximum number of control channels available in a single data link (or “universe”).

What is a DMX Universe?

A DMX universe is a single network or “line” of DMX data containing exactly 512 channels. If a lighting rig requires more than 512 channels, you must add a second universe (Universe 2), which gives you another 512 channels, and so on.

What happens if two lights share the same address?

If two identical fixtures are given the exact same starting address, they will mimic each other perfectly. This is often done intentionally (called “soft patching”) if you want two lights on opposite sides of a stage to do the exact same thing without taking up extra console channels. However, if done accidentally, you will lose independent control of those lights.

What is a “DMX clash” or overlapping channels?

A clash occurs when you patch a new fixture before the previous fixture’s channel footprint has ended. For example, if a 10-channel light starts at Address 1, it uses channels 1-10. If you accidentally patch the next light at Address 8, channels 8, 9, and 10 will send mixed signals to both fixtures, causing them to flicker, strobe randomly, or behave erratically.

Can I skip addresses between fixtures?

Yes! It is very common to leave “gaps” between fixtures. For example, if you have fixtures that use 12 channels, you might address them at 1, 21, 41, and 61. This leaves a gap of empty channels in between, which gives you breathing room just in case you ever want to upgrade to a 16-channel fixture in the future without reprogramming your entire rig.

What happens if I calculate past channel 512?

A single DMX line physically cannot transmit beyond channel 512. If a fixture is set to address 500 but requires 20 channels, channels 513-519 will simply be lost, and the light will not function properly. You will need to move that fixture to a second DMX universe.

Do I have to plug the lights in physically in order of their addresses?

No. DMX is a serial data loop. The console sends out data for all 512 channels simultaneously down the cable. A light can be physically plugged in last in the daisy-chain but be set to Address 1. The light simply “listens” to the data stream for its specific address, regardless of where it sits on the cable.

Why do some older lights use tiny switches instead of a digital screen?

How many lights can I daisy-chain together?

While you are limited by the 512 channels logically, you are also limited by the electrical signal physically. The DMX standard recommends a maximum of 32 fixtures chained together on a single run. If you need more, you should use a DMX splitter (optosplitter).

Yes, best practice dictates using a 120-ohm DMX terminator plugged into the “DMX Out” port of the very last fixture in your daisy chain. This stops the digital signal from reflecting back down the cable, which can cause lights to glitch, flicker, or drop signals unexpectedly.
