How to Calculate DMX Addresses Correctly

A single DMX line (known as a Universe) contains exactly 512 channels of control. When patching a lighting rig, every fixture must be assigned a unique “Starting Address” so it knows which instructions to listen to from the lighting console.

The Golden Rule of DMX Addressing: Next Start Address = Current Start Address + Channel Footprint.
If a moving head starts at channel 1 and uses 16 channels, it occupies channels 1 through 16. The next available address you can assign is 17.

Avoiding DMX Clashes

A DMX clash occurs when two independent fixtures have overlapping addresses. For example, if you patch a 10-channel light at Address 1, and mistakenly patch the next light at Address 8, channels 8, 9, and 10 will send data to both fixtures simultaneously. What is a DMX universe?

A DMX universe is a single network system that carries 512 channels of data. If your lighting rig requires more than 512 channels, you must add a second universe (Universe 2), which provides a fresh set of 512 channels.

How many addresses can I put on one DMX cable?

Logically, you can fit up to 512 channels of data on one cable. Physically, the DMX standard recommends daisy-chaining no more than 32 individual fixtures on a single cable run before needing an opto-splitter or signal amplifier.

What is a channel “footprint”?

A channel footprint (or channel mode) is the total number of channels a specific fixture requires to operate fully. A simple LED Par might have a footprint of 4 channels (Red, Green, Blue, Dimmer), while a complex moving head might have a footprint of 24 channels.

What happens if I calculate an address past 512?

Standard DMX universes max out at 512. If your calculations place a fixture at address 515, you have exceeded the universe. You must physically plug that fixture into a new DMX port on your console (Universe 2) and set its starting address to 3.

What is an “Absolute” DMX Address?

No, DMX does not care about the physical order of the cables. A light patched to Address 1 can be at the very end of your 100-foot daisy chain, and a light patched to Address 400 can be the first one plugged into the console. Is it okay to leave gaps between DMX addresses?
