DMX Switch 10: Address Bit or Mode Selector?

A tenth physical DIP switch is not automatically a tenth DMX address bit. Before setting it, check whether your fixture assigns it a binary weight, an operating mode, or another function.

Binary capacity and DMX limits are different

Binary address bitsPatternsDirect numeric rangeWhat this establishes
82560–255Capacity of eight binary bits
95120–511Capacity of nine binary bits
1010240–1023Capacity of ten binary bits

DMX start addresses use channels 1–512 within a universe. The physical switch bank may use direct values, an offset, reserved combinations, or separate mode controls. Ten-bit mathematical capacity does not expand a DMX universe to 1023 channels.

How to identify switch 10

  1. Find the manual for the exact fixture model and revision.
  2. Look for an address-weight table. A tenth address bit would have weight 512 in direct binary encoding.
  3. Read the operating-mode table separately. A switch may select DMX, automatic, or sound-controlled operation instead of adding to the address.
  4. Check whether mode selection uses a combination of switches rather than one switch alone.
  5. Follow the documented procedure for activating the setting.

For example, ADJ’s FAQ describes fixture-specific combinations involving switches 9 and 10. This is why an address-only calculator cannot determine the correct operating mode for every fixture.

Worked comparison: address 100

With the direct weights SW1 = 1 through SW9 = 256, address 100 is 64 + 32 + 4. Its ON address switches are SW7, SW6, and SW3. The nine-bit binary value is 001100100.

If switch 10 is documented as a mode selector, set it according to the mode table rather than the binary total. If the manual documents an offset, apply that offset exactly as stated. Do not add 1 to every calculated address: direct encoding of 100 is 100, not 101.

What about address 512?

Nine direct binary address bits stop at 511. A device’s special handling of 512 must be documented. Turning on a tenth switch only represents 512 if the manufacturer actually assigns it that address weight.

The fixture’s channel footprint also matters: its last channel must fit within 512. A 16-channel fixture’s highest valid start is 497. See the nine-bit address reference for a detailed example.

Multiple universes do not extend DIP address weights

A universe is selected through the controller, node, interface, or other routing configuration. A fixture’s local start address still refers to channels within that universe. Use the DMX universe address converter for numbering and verify routing separately.
